Ikko Tanaka Issey Miyake Coat
The back of the garment features a bold circular motif in stark white against a black ground, derived from Ikko Tanaka's celebrated "Nihon Buyo" poster series from 1981. In these works, Tanaka reinterpreted traditional Japanese theatrical imagery through a radically modern visual language built from pure geometric forms--circles, squares, and abstracted facial structures. The circular composition seen on the coat references the stylized coiffure and simplified features of the original dancer figure, transformed into an almost symbolic graphic presence.
Miyake's reinterpretation elevates the artwork beyond print alone. Rather than functioning as static decoration, the graphic becomes kinetic through the movement of the body, distorting and recomposing itself as the wearer walks. This dialogue between motion, space, and image lies at the core of the collaboration's conceptual significance.
The silhouette is intentionally oversized and sculptural, conceived almost as a wearable cape. Cut in a dramatic trapeze form with integrated hood and expansive batwing sleeves, the garment creates a powerful sense of volume while allowing the printed composition to unfold across a broad architectural surface.
Crafted in lightweight technical polyester with a refined matte finish, the coat combines functionality with visual purity--a hallmark of Miyake's textile innovation. The material's fluid yet structured behavior enhances the dynamic interaction between graphic form and bodily movement, reinforcing the garment's sculptural quality.
Originally launched in 2016 and developed through successive "volumes," the "IKKO TANAKA ISSEY MIYAKE" series is now regarded as one of the most significant collaborations between graphic design and contemporary fashion. These garments exist not merely as clothing, but as collectible design objects that bridge art, motion, and textile experimentation.
Today, pieces from this series are highly sought after within archival fashion and design collections for their cultural significance, conceptual depth, and enduring visual impact.
